That Sofa Costs How Much?!

It is fair to say that we Kiwis love a bargain. And certainly, with the lowering of import duties and the resultant flood of cheap furniture that has spread its way across the country, we might be fooled into the idea that we are indeed saving money. Sadly this is not the case.

Blinded by thrift, it is easy to lose an eye for detail, a nose for quality and frankly, one's taste! In an effort to save a penny, we are purchasing uncomfortable furniture of dubious manufacture that is intended to last a couple of years at best. Oh, how our Grandparents would roll...

Investing in a well made sofa will always prove its worth it in the long run. A classic design, made using the best materials and top notch construction is without doubt the best value decision you can make.

Take a $3000 sofa and compare it with one that costs $7000. Why pay the extra? Ask the following questions and you will usually get your answer.

  • Is it a bespoke item made by trained craftsmen?
  • What is the frame made of?
  • Do I have a choice of foams and fills to suit my personal comfort level?
  • What is the quality level of the finish?
  • Will the manufacturer modify the design to make it suitable for my particular physical dimensions?
  • Will the upholstery not only suit my aesthetic requirements but also meet my expectations from a practical perspective?
  • Does the furniture come with a guarantee and if so, for how long?
  • If something does go wrong, is the manufacturer available locally to quickly correct the issue?
  • Is it a classic design that will stand the test of time?

At Trove, we think the smart money is on buying once and buying well. Finding yourself smitten by a couch is one thing, but the key to a long lasting relationship is understanding the love and craftsmanship that has gone into the creation of a bespoke item of furniture, made especially for you.

Tassels And Trims

YSL Palais Suede Ankle Boots
With minimalism finally on the wane, we are seeing a return to the "more is more" school of decorating.

We at Trove Interior Design are loving all the new passementerie trims being released as a result. Fantastic for embellishing everything from cushions to lampshades and furniture, we were interested to note that Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Louboutin are using cords and tassels to trick up their latest shoe designs.

Gorgeous New Fornasetti

Cole and Son's Fornasetti Promenade Wallpaper... With a rogue monkey!

Fornasetti, the world's wittiest and most whimsical wallpaper designer. At Trove Interior Design we are huge fans and are pleased to announce that we have just taken possession of Cole and Son's brand new release, Fornasetti II.

Brimming with wild and wonderful papers, this new collection is even better than the last one.

Decoupaging Fornasetti papers onto a boring piece of furniture to magic it into a fantastic piece will liven any dull interior. Or take a leaf out Fornasetti's own book and use one paper as a base paper while cutting shapes from another to create a completely original new look.

Finding Pleasure in the Beauty of Every Day Objects

Vintage Royal Albert Virginia Pattern Butterfly Handled Tea Trio

The difference between a house and a home is often found in the collections of personal treasures that weave their way into your life over time.

While many of us opt for showy pieces of art or objet, collections of every day items, when taken from a unique perspective, can add tremendous design value to an interior at a reasonable cost. The pleasure of finding these pieces is an added spin off!

Trove's Design Director, Daniella, has a thing for butterfly handled teacups. Produced in the nineteen twenties and thirties, these delicate and gorgeous bone china dainties have also turned out to be a good investment often selling on eBay for over $500 a trio.

Presented in a handy book format, All About Me is positively bristling with fabulously quirky wallpapers and textiles for pint sized design purists.

Our favourite fabric in the collection has to be Chocks Away, an amazing appliquéd and embroidered cloth featuring helicopters and aeroplanes but there is plenty to delight the girls as well.
